The Youths in Natural Resources Apprentice toured the logistics yard and port facility of CGX Energy in Berbice today.

The young people were briefed on the work of the CGX Energy Inc.’s logistics yard, Palmyra, Berbice by Executive Chairman, Professor Suresh Narine. They were also briefed about the company’s plan to construct a port facility at Crab Island.

Emanuel Trotman, an 18-year-old Linden Technical Institute student, said learning about the oil and gas industry has fuelled his interest to study that area. Trotman who has pursued computer science studies at the LTI said he would like to study Geology at the University of Guyana.

“It was an awesome experience especially knowing they have onshore and offshore drilling operations. Now since I’ve gathered a bit knowledge from CGX Managers they gave me courage to go on and do geology studies,” Trotman said.

Emily Ramsuchit recently completed her Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), said the experience has been “really great”. “It offers a lot of opportunities of what Guyana has to offer and a lot of experiences,” the 17-year-old said.

Following their tour of CGX Energy Inc, the youths were in New Amsterdam to witness the handing over of play park equipment and trees, by Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman, towards the beautification of the Esplanade park.

The donation was made to the Mayor of New Amsterdam. Minister Trotman said it is his way of giving back to the community he grew up in. The minister also committed an additional $3M towards the restoration of the park.

Shevonne Joseph, a 19-year-old radio announcer from Region Nine, was among the young people on hand at today’s simple handing over ceremony. She said her experience with the programme has been educational.

“Participating in this programme has really built my capacity and understanding of Guyana. We visited various regions and I got an overview of that region. I have learned a lot I am hoping when I get back home I can share it,” Joseph said.

The Youths In Natural Resources Apprenticeship Programme was launched earlier this month. There are 26 students from across the country participating in the programme which aims to promote the natural resources sector as a career option.
