Profile of Hon. Vickram Bharrat, M.P, Minister of Natural Resources
The Hon. Vickram Bharrat, M.P., a native of Berbice, Region Six, brings a wealth of expertise and dedication to his role as Minister of Natural Resources. A graduate of New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School, Minister Bharrat holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Guyana and a Master’s Degree in Business Management from the Swiss School of Management in Switzerland. His academic and professional journey has shaped his deep understanding of governance, public management, and strategic leadership.
Minister Bharrat’s career spans over fifteen years as an educator, mentor, and entrepreneur. He is the founder of Xenon Academy, a prominent institution providing primary and secondary education in Grove, East Bank Demerara. His hands-on experience as an educator and his ability to connect with and inspire young minds have instilled in him valuable skills, such as patience and active listening—qualities he leverages in his ministerial responsibilities to foster productive stakeholder engagement.
His professional journey began in public service, where he served as a Technical Officer at both the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Health. He later contributed to sustainable development initiatives as a Project Manager with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). At the community level, Minister Bharrat demonstrated his commitment to local development as Chairman of the Grove/Diamond Neighbourhood Democratic Council, where he worked to improve public services and enhance community infrastructure.
Appointed as Minister of Natural Resources on August 6, 2020, and as a Member of Guyana’s Twelfth Parliament on September 1, 2020, Minister Bharrat oversees critical sectors, including forestry, mining and the burgeoning petroleum industry. His prior experience as a Parliamentarian in the Eleventh Parliament (2016–2019) and his long-standing membership in the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) — which he joined at age 14 through the Progressive Youth Organisation — reflects his unwavering dedication to national development. Minister Bharrat currently serves as a member of the PPP’s Central and Executive Committees.
Beyond his professional commitments, Minister Bharrat is a devoted family man who is married and has two children. His leadership is guided by his deep-rooted passion for Guyana’s progress, a steadfast commitment to good governance, and a vision for a sustainable and prosperous future.
